The Chugach Museum

Study our culture, and you will learn both where we have been and where we are going. The traditions passed down to us by our Elders tell our story and act as a roadmap for how to approach future challenges.

The Chugach Region – which includes Eyak (Cordova), Seward, Valdez, Port Graham, Chenega, Nanwalek (English Bay) and Tatitlek, doesn’t have a dedicated cultural space. Many of our precious artifacts – some dating back thousands of years – are sitting in storage. These items aren’t meant to be tucked away in hard-to-access locations or displayed thousands of miles away in out-of-state museums. They need to be accessible. Studied. Preserved for future generations of Alaskans.

With the support of our communities, Chugach Alaska Corporation, Chugach Heritage Foundation, our village corporations and nonprofits, we are on the cusp of having a place to do just that.

Soon, we will break ground on a two-story, 6,000 square foot facility. The Chugach Museum will be a state-of-the art facility where the community will be able to explore, understand and share in our unique history, as well as an innovation center for preparing the next generation of problem-solvers.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, the Museum has several years of operational funding, and money to support equipment purchases. However, it’s up to the Museum and its partners to raise funds to support building construction costs. We need YOUR help.

Please consider a financial donation to the Chugach Museum Capital Campaign. Your contribution signals that you share our vision. The activities, connections and learning that take place inside the Museum will be a game-changer for our people and the broader Anchorage community. We hope you join us in making it a reality.
